Waterton Friday
Up early again. We saw a female Ruffed Grouse in a tree on the Akamina and a juvenile running around on the ground below her. Further up we saw a Spruce Grouse huddled on the ground, it wasn't until that night when I was looking through the pictures on the laptop that I noticed the little yellow chick poking its head out from under her wing. As we started the drive to the Red Rock Parkway we were talking about how we hadn't seen any Elk the entire week. We were rewarded for that conversation a few minutes later. We came around a corner and over a hill a spotted a huge herd of Elk in the field to our right. There was so many I couldn't fit them all in one picture. I zoomed in on one of the pictures that night and counted 215 elk so with the ones I couldn't fit in there must have been over 300. On the return trip I spotted a massive black bear in the river valley. He was huge even from where we were sitting a couple hundred feet away. I think this is the biggest black bear I have ever seen. Back in town we went for a walk and saw a couple Cedar Waxwings. Near Cameron Falls one of the residents had a hummingbird feeder on their deck and we got to watch some Rufous Hummingbirds feeding.
