Waterton Wednesday
Wednesday morning we got up early again (right after sunrise and right before sunset are the best times to see wildlife). Almost immediately we saw a small brown bear. We could tell by the blue ear tag he was wearing that it was the same brown bear that repaid us for keeping our distance by running away from my camera the morning before. He was on the move and feeding and went out of sight so we went up the road to see if we could see him from above. As soon as we turned the corner we could see a bear, but it wasn't the same one. This one was black and was only a couple hundred feet from the brown bear. I got a couple shots and we went back down the hill to find the brown one. A couple of shots of him and we were on the move up the hill again. We saw a brown bear on the maintenance yard hill again but didn't stop because I knew he would be too far for any good pictures. On the Red Rock Parkway we saw a young bull moose near the old beaver lodge that was kind enough to let me get a few shots of him. A couple minutes later we saw a small brown bear on the hillside at the foot of the first mountain. He was a little far off but we were the only ones around so I took a few grainy shots of it. That night after spending the day on the beach we went for our evening drive. I spotted a huge brown bearing climbing up the rocks of a waterfall. By the time we got the car stopped and backed up to where I saw him he was disappearing into the trees at the top of the waterfall and the only shot I got was of half of his butt. I was feeling a little dejected after this because these would have been some great iconic pictures. But I quickly got over it when we found the large brown female black bear. We were watching her and I was shooting away when out from behind our car appeared a little cub. As he walked up to the big bear a second cub appeared out of nowhere. The first one was unlucky enough to get the discipline for getting too far away from mom because she nipped him on the butt causing him to cry out in pain. He ran off, she chased him as did the second cub. All of a sudden a third cub showed up on the other side of our car. It was the triplets we had seen a month earlier!!! We were both ecstatic as we had been hoping to see this rare family all week long. I happily fired off a bunch of pictures until she realized she was "trapped" between us and some parked cars and moved off into the trees.
